Card purchases on exchanges from Turkey: who converts the currency and what it costs you
When you buy crypto with a Turkish bank card, a currency conversion may happen at the exchange, at a payment partner or at your bank. How to tell which, compare the rates, and pick the option that keeps the total cost visible.
Multiple exchanges | Turkey | TRY | fees, access and account safety
A card purchase looks like one transaction, but behind it there can be up to three parties applying a rate: the exchange or its payment partner quoting a crypto price, a conversion if the purchase is priced in a currency other than lira, and your bank applying its own exchange rate and fees when it settles. If you have ever seen a statement amount noticeably higher than the in-app total, one of these layers is the reason. The fix is to know which currency each step uses and to choose deliberately.
Look at the currency on the quote screen
On the buy-with-card screen of Binance, OKX, Bybit or Bitget, check which fiat currency the quote is in. If lira is offered and you pay with a lira card, the bank does not need to convert, and the main costs are the quote's spread and any fee shown. If only dollars or euros are offered, your bank will convert at its own rate, which the exchange cannot display. The available currencies and methods depend on your country and account, so look at what your app actually lists.
Watch for a conversion offer at checkout
Some payment pages offer to charge you in lira even when the purchase is priced in another currency, showing a converted amount. This is convenient, but the rate used may be less favourable than your bank's. Compare the offered lira figure with the amount you would get using your bank's published card exchange rate for that day. If the difference is large, choosing to pay in the original currency and letting your bank convert can be cheaper.
Your bank's side
Turkish banks may add a foreign transaction fee, treat certain merchant types differently, or apply limits to online and international payments. Read your card's fee schedule or call the bank before the first purchase. In the banking app, make sure internet and international shopping are enabled for the card if needed. Repeated declined attempts can trigger a fraud block, so check the app for a pending confirmation before retrying.
Reconcile after every purchase
After the purchase, write down the in-app total and quote currency, then the amount that appears on the card statement once it posts. The difference is your conversion and bank cost. Over a few purchases you will see whether card funding is reasonable for you compared with a bank transfer or other methods your exchange offers. Keep the order reference from the exchange with each entry in case you need to query a charge.
