OCO orders: planning both your exit points in one step

Guides · 2026-10-15

Many spot traders know roughly where they would take profit and where they would cut a loss, but they keep those plans in their head and watch the chart. That works until the move happens while they are asleep or at work. An OCO order, short for one cancels the other, lets you place both exits at once. When one of them fills, the exchange cancels the other automatically. Binance, OKX, Bybit and Bitget all offer some version of this on spot, though the menus differ.

How an OCO order works

An OCO combines two orders for the same asset and quantity. One is a limit order above the current price to take profit. The other is a stop order below the current price to limit losses, which becomes a limit or market order when triggered, depending on the settings. If the price reaches the take-profit level first, that order fills and the stop is cancelled. If the price falls to the stop first, the reverse happens.

Setting it up on spot

On the spot trading screen, look for OCO in the list of order types. Enter the quantity, the take-profit price, the stop trigger price and, if asked, the limit price for the stop. Make sure the quantity does not exceed what you hold, and that the prices are on the correct side of the current market. Check the preview before confirming, then find the order in your open orders list to see both parts.

Common mistakes

Setting the stop limit price too close to the trigger is a frequent problem; in a fast drop the price can pass both and leave the order unfilled. Leave some room between trigger and limit, or use a market-type stop if available. Another mistake is placing an OCO and then selling part of the position manually, leaving the order larger than your remaining balance. Cancel and replace the OCO whenever you change the position.

When to review

Review your OCO orders when the market moves significantly, when you add to or reduce the position, and before long periods away from the screen. Turn on notifications so you know when one side fills. After a fill, check the order history for the price and fee, and note the outcome. Over time you will refine where you place each side based on how the asset tends to move.
